JP Hayes Essays (3554 words) - Rockefeller Family,

JP Hayes Mr. McKenzie US Honors History 2 November 2017 American Monopolies, Good or Bad? America in the 1800's was a completely different place then it is now due to the laws that were in place, culture, politics, and the business world. After the Civil War America was in a reconstruction period where the government and physical structures had to be rebuilt to the citizen's approval. During this time a few smart men were able to pinpoint America's greatest needs and create an abundant supply of that item to sell. The most significant bosses that are famous for running a monopoly are J.P Morgan, Andrew Carnegie, Cornelius Vanderbilt, and John D. Rockefeller. Not only did these men their companies have an enormous supply of goods and resources but also, they had no competition so they controlled the prices. To run such a big business while also making sure you stay on top meant these bosses had to be vicious with competitors and work anyone who was willing too. While the monopolies were starting up and hitting their peak of business the Civil War was also going on, which m eant a lot of men were fighting. This caused woman and children of most ages to come and work for large companies that involved dangerous work, long hours, and low pay. The bosses did not care that young kids worked for them and that people were dying in their factories because they were getting so rich. There are few cases when a monopoly can be beneficial for a nation's economy and it's people; plus for this to happen the bosses have to care more about the people then money. Generally a monopoly is a bad thing hence why laws were created to control the power they can have. When one company has no competition problems are created such as raising the price to be unfair for the buyer, lower the quality of the product, and there is no reason to innovate. The four tycoon bosses in the 1800's were trying to help America grow but at the same time make a lot of money. All though the four tycoon bosses in the 1800's helped build up America's businesses and transportation methods, there wer e more negative impacts such as weakening the economy, cheating the working class, and viciously eliminating all competition which would not have ended if it was not for the Sherman Anti-Trust law. Cornelius Vanderbilt was able to become one of the wealthiest men in America while also helping out the nation but it all starts back in his early life. Vanderbilt was born in Manhattan and lived with his family which his dad was the supplier of money for them. He was a steamboat captain who made Vanderbilt work with him as a young boy. This was the best thing his dad ever did for him because in the 1820's Vanderbilt entered the steamship business for himself and from here on out the money piles in. For many years Vanderbilt had to compete against other captains and during this time is when he learned his ruthless tactics that would lead him to being a boss. In the 1850's Vanderbilt got a huge break when the California gold rush happen but is was not the gold that saved him. While everyone was focused on finding gold Vanderbilt focused on how people would get over there. He created a route for steamships that would take passengers from New York to San Francisco faster then ever be fore. His route was an instant success and caused him to make nearly one million dollars a year which in todays economy would be twenty five million dollars. This wouldn't be enough for Vanderbilt as he was just getting started in the 1860's when he decided to enter the railroad business. He gained control of a set of railroads stretching from New York to Chicago but he soon noticed a flaw. After bringing his son William Vanderbilt into the business in 1862 the two created a new systems of railways that stretched over multiple states and fixed all the cons of the railways before hand. The new railroads all had the same protocols, timetables, and covered so much more
